This all comes from Sahih al-Bukhari, which is, if not the most, one of the most highly regarded Hadith collections.

___

The number of women in hell, if these demographic statements about the inhabitants of hell are true, is a much more serious issue than anything the Bible says about women (as long as the Bible [or Jesus] does not say most people that will be in Hell are women, and it doesn't say that). Why should women be over-represented in Hell?

___

It is important to note one important difference.

These hadiths are not saying

1. Most women will go to hell.

These hadiths are saying

2. Of those people who are in hell or will end up in hell, most of these will be women (rather than men).

This is important because statement 1 is very different from statement 2.

___

An Islamic website commenting on the hadith:

"It was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that women will form the majority of the people of Hell

...

Our believing sisters who learn of this hadeeth should behave like those Sahabiyat (female Companions) who, when they learned of this, did good deeds which would be the means, by Allah’s leave, of keeping them far away from being included in that [female] majority of the inhabitants of Hell. "

Bump (since no one has responded). Is this a mainstream belief among Muslims? Or is it mostly only held by Islamic terrorist groups and those who support them?
