The term “nihilist” was new to me. Looking up the definition it is “a person who believes that life is meaningless and rejects all religious and moral principles.” I think we have to remember here that people are always deciding on a practical morality, between them. A man can try to adopt this philosophy, but if he ignores the laws he’ll be imprisoned. And, he’ll be first in line to defend his own rights if these are infringed, proving he has not rejected morality entirely. As an interesting corollary here, perhaps all criminals could be called nihilists, insofar as they reject the moral core of the victim. Then, examining the morality that arises we find it is generally about self-interest, as encoded in the Declaration of Independence. Men seek happiness, but laws prohibit impinging on others.

I hadn’t been thinking nihilism to be central to atheist thinking. Can you point to a website where the argument you’re countering appears? I had been thinking atheists generally follow a utilitarian morality, insisting that humans are a sufficient measure of morality with no need for God to dictate. That is indeed the world we’re living in today. One might argue that this type of morality is only greed enshrined, and that a higher morality could be defined if the created souls could face one another warmly, cooperating instead of competing. The motive of such souls would be universal joy, not private good.

@musicandfaith94, I understand the argument you make here. I believe your second premise is false. A person can start with a false premise in order to conclude that the false premise necessarily leads to a contradiction. This is common in arguments that use formal logic.

As a mathematics student, I struggled with this concept for a while. Consider the following argument.

Suppose there are finitely many prime numbers. Let k be the number of prime numbers and the set of prime numbers be {p1, p2, ..., pk}. Let x be the product p1 times p2 times ... times pk. Then x + 1 divided by p1 has a remainder of 1, x + 1 divided by p2 has a remainder of 1, ..., and x + 1 divided by pk has a remainder of 1. Thus, x + 1 is not evenly divisible by any prime number. This shows x + 1 is prime. Since p1, p2, ..., and pk are all positive, x + 1 is larger that p1, p2, ..., and pk. Thus, x + 1 is a prime number not in the set {p1, p2, ... pk} and there are at least k + 1 prime numbers. This contradicts that there are k prime numbers. The overall conclusion of this is that the original supposition (there are finitely many prime numbers) leads to a contradiction. Thus, the original supposition must be false. Therefore, there are infinitely many prime numbers.

Concerning an argument like this, I asked my professor, "What allows us to say, 'There are finitely many prime numbers?'" He did not have a good answer on that particular day. I now understand we are not saying there are finitely many prime numbers. Instead, we are saying if there are finitely many prime numbers, then we reach a contradiction. Therefore, the original premise must be false.

In terms of formal logic (and skipping several steps):
If there are finitely many prime numbers, then there are more prime numbers than there are prime numbers.
There are not more prime numbers than there are prime numbers.
Therefore, there are infinitely many prime numbers.

Abstracting this to symbols gives:
P implies Q.
Q is false.
Therefore, P is false.

Notice this does not require us to assert that P is true, only that P implies Q is true. The same holds for the nihilist atheist. Such a person can claim if true evil exists, then there must be a contradiction. Therefore, true evil does not exist. Doing this does not require the claim that (contrary to their nihilist beliefs) true evil exists.

Nihilism argues that we need to let go of the idea that core morality is true or right in any sense. In scientism’s view, this solves the problem of whether God picked moral norms because they are right, or moral norms are right because God picked them–a problem they argue theism can’t answer. But, if atheists stand by nihilism, shouldn’t that prevent them from using the problem of evil as an argument against theism? The problem of evil is arguably the best argument atheists have against theism, but if they stand by nihilism, they wouldn’t have grounds to use it. If they don’t believe that core morality is true or right in any sense, then they don’t believe that our perception of good and evil are true in any sense. In that sense, they wouldn’t be able to qualify anything as truly evil or truly good. The whole problem of evil argument against theism hinges on there being true evil and God allowing for it to exist. But, if there is no true evil, then it would be pointless to say that it is conflicting that God allows for something that we only perceive as evil but cannot say is true evil to exist. To lay it out in argument form:

1-   If you don’t believe there is anything true or right about core morality, then you don’t believe there is true good or true evil
2-   If you don’t believe in true evil, then you can’t use the problem of evil as an argument against theism
3-   Nihilist atheists don’t believe there is anything true or right about core morality
4-   So, nihilist atheists don’t believe there is true good or true evil
5-   So, nihilist atheists can’t use the problem of evil as an argument against theism

With this argument, neither do I intend to object the problem of evil nor do I intend to object nihilism; I just want to make the point that if atheist are also nihilists, they should not use the problem of evil as an argument against theism.
